Understanding Baby Shakes and Tremors: Causes and Concerns
As a new parent, it's natural to worry when you see your newborn's odd, shaky movements. Here's what you need to know about baby shakes and tremors:
Fine Motor Skills Development: Shaking can be part of fine motor skills development. For instance, newborns may shake their head and extremities as they prepare to hold up their heads.
Immature Nervous System: Newborns have immature nervous systems, causing jerky and twitchy movements. These typically become more fluid by 1 to 2 months old.
Startle (Moro) Reflex: This involuntary movement occurs when a baby is startled. It usually disappears by 3 to 6 months. Swaddling can help minimize it during sleep.
Caffeine in Breast Milk: High caffeine intake by breastfeeding mothers can cause jitteriness in babies. Limit caffeine to reduce these effects.
Sleep Myoclonus: Shaky movements while falling asleep or waking up are normal and usually resolve within a year.
Hunger and Diaper Changes: Babies might shake or tremble when hungry or during diaper changes as a reaction to discomfort or stress.
Other Causes: Shakes can also be due to cold, low blood sugar, or other medical conditions. Look for signs like blue skin, lethargy, or lack of interest in feeding and consult your pediatrician if concerned.
Signs of Seizures: Seizures are rhythmic, cannot be stopped by holding the limb, and may include changes in facial expression, breathing, or heart rate. Record any concerning movements and consult your doctor for a proper diagnosis.
Understanding these movements can help you determine when to seek medical advice.
